Grading Guide

Introduction

Have you ever wondered why we give our beloved cards grades like superheroes in a comic book? Well, buckle up as we embark on a fun and friendly journey to explore the whimsical reasons behind grading conditions for trading cards:

  • Standardization for Fun and Fairness: Grading gives us a fun and fair way to talk about the condition of our beloved trading cards. It's like having a universal language for card quality!
  • Precise Descriptions for Happy Collectors: Grading helps us describe cards accurately, so everyone knows exactly what they're getting. Less guessing games—just happy collectors!
  • Value Adventures: The condition of a trading card directly affects its value. Cards in mint or near-mint condition are often more valuable than those with visible wear or damage. The condition of a card can be like a treasure map—it leads us to its value! Grading helps us understand how valuable our cards are based on their condition.

In a nutshell, grading conditions for trading cards make our collecting adventures more enjoyable, fair, and exciting. It's all about celebrating our love for cards while making sure everyone has a fantastic collecting experience! Let's dive into the magical world of trading cards together!

Card Condition Grades and Standardization

Mint/Near Mint (NM)
  • Like new with no signs of wear, clean surfaces, sharp corners and edges,
  • No noticeable printing and manufacturing imperfections or flaws
(Default) Lightly Played + (LP+)
  • Corners are sharp, surfaces are clean without noticeable grime, scuffs, or scratches.
  • Minimal discoloration and clouding
  • Minor printing/manufacturing imperfections are acceptable.
  • Minimal fine scratch/scuff is acceptable under very close inspection.
  • Estimated Price Decrease: 0-5% below NM price on average.

LP cards have minor wear but are still in good condition for gameplay. Lightly Played cards offer affordability and quality, making them popular among players and collectors

Moderately Played (MP)
  • Moderate grime, wear, creases, bends, moderate edge wear, or corner wear
  • Moderate printing/manufacturing imperfections
  • Moderate discoloration or clouding
  • Minimal peeling, rippling, delamination, or foreign substance
  • 20-40% below NM price on average

MP cards show noticeable wear but are still playable. While they may not appeal to collectors seeking pristine cards, they are suitable for players looking for functional cards at a reduced price.

Heavily Played (HP)
  • Major grime, wear, creases, bends, tears, or markings.
  • Major printing/manufacturing imperfections
  • Major discoloration or clouding
  • Minor peeling, rippling, delamination, or foreign substance
  • 40-60% below NM price on average.

HP cards are typically chosen by budget players or those who prioritize function over aesthetics. Collectors generally avoid heavily played cards unless they are exceptionally rare or valuable.

Damaged (DMG/D):
  • Severe grime, wear, creases, bends, tears, or markings
  • Severe discoloration, clouding, peeling, rippling, delamination, or foreign substance
  • Indents, ceases, or bends that can be felt through a sleeve
  • >60% below NM price on average.

DMG cards have severe flaws and are often unsuitable for official play or collection. They are significantly discounted due to their condition and are mainly sought after by casual players who need cards for gameplay rather than collectibility.

Factory Defects/Oddities
  • Major printing/manufacturing error
  • Miscut, filler, discard, or test print cards
  • Sheet, ink, text, or color error
  • Non-factory cut

Factory Defects/Oddity cards are products not manufactured as intended. Depending on the card’s playability and/or collectability, including severity and variations, some can be worth highly to the right connoisseur!
